The Best Anal Sex Toys:
My Favorite Anal Toys Reviewed
Written by: Don Watson | Updated: March 3rd, 2019
With thousands of different anal toys on the market, all in different shapes, sizes, and colors, it isn't always easy to narrow down which one will be right for you.
My wife and I know this issue firsthand, as we've been using anal toys for some time now and have had to navigate the vast expanses of the internet to find ones that actually work best for us.
Amazon has been where the most failures come from, which kind of surprised us. The toys bought there tended to be of low-quality, were dubious in material (body-safe, please!), and the price was usually higher than buying directly from the people who made it.
Investing in a quality sex toy goes a long way, especially when talking about anal sex toys. The lining of your anus is very sensitive and seeing as how evolution designed it as a one-way passage, the wrong toys can cause a lot of damage.
So the utmost caution should be exercised when selecting toys that'll be going up your most closely guarded hole.
That's why we made this article, to help you navigate the sea of toys available and hopefully let you in one some things you might not have realized are a huge part of selecting the right toy.
Read through our list carefully, and by the end of it you should be able to find a toy that'll fit your experience level and personal biology perfectly.
Butt Plugs vs Prostate Massagers
First things first, you need to decide whether you're looking for a butt plug or a prostate massager.
If you were born a woman, you don't have the benefit of having a prostate. While a woman can still get pleasure from a prostate massager, the way they are shaped & function is more for the experienced anal woman than for those just starting. That's why we'd recommend a butt plug first and foremost if you are dealing with female anatomy.
Men have the benefit of being able to take full advantage of both prostate massagers as well as butt plugs. It can be daunting at first to consider shoving things up your behind, but I assure you the payoff is more than worth it. It took me a long time to become comfortable with the idea of using anal toys, but after my first prostate orgasm I wished I had gotten around to it sooner. A prostate orgasm is much more intense than the average kind, and if you go through the prostate you can even have a few back-to-back orgasms instead of having to wait through the dreaded refractory period.
What Is a Butt Plug?
As the name suggests, butt plugs are inserted into your behind and a good one won't move around much once its in use. People are drawn to butt plugs because the anal cavity is lined with sensitive nerve endings that can bring great pleasure when stimulated properly. On top of that, some people also enjoy the feeling of fullness that a butt plug brings.
They don't have to be worn during sex, often times my wife uses a butt plug while she is masturbating as well. In fact, some people like to wear a butt plug while they go around doing their day to day activities, just to throw a little kink into their lives.
What Is a Prostate Massager?
Prostate massagers are anal sex toys (with or without built-in vibrators) that are designed to hit and stimulate the prostate. The end goal of any prostate massager session is the much sought after prostate orgasm.Want to learn about how to use a prostate massager? The prostate is a lot more well-documented and understood than the female G-spot, all it takes is a little bit of biology understanding and some adventurous spirit to hit your prostate and reap the rewards.
My favorite thing about using a prostate massager is that one of the side effects for me is an erection as hard as diamonds. The stiffness of the erections I'm able to achieve while using one of the prostate massagers in my collection is very difficult to achieve through other forms of stimulation. It should be noted that this isn't the same for everyone, and ejaculation isn't necessary to have had a prostate orgasm either. That last fact surprised me when I first learned about it, to be honest.
After learning that prostate massagers provide stimulation unlike anything I'm used to, I was hooked. At times, it's like being back in high school.
Anal toys that stimulate the prostate are something I thoroughly enjoy. I encourage all men to give them a go and I suggest any women who want a bit more spice in their sex life to try and gently nudge their husbands into giving it a shot. My wife struggled for years to get me to finally submit to experimenting with anal sex toys but she can attest the number of times I've thanked her for it.
Our Favorite Butt Plugs
The Lovense Hush
The Hush by Lovense is my personal favorite butt plug. It fits snugly, has genius grooves in the stem meant to wick lube towards them to keep the experience as comfortable as possible, and is superbly powerful.
Typically, butt plugs range in size from 1 inch in diameter to about 1.75 inches in diameter. A snug butt plug leads to a much more full feeling and more stimulation overall. A larger butt plug is more likely to cause discomfort while with a smaller one you risk not getting the full experience possible. Most people start small and then work their way up so they don't end up having a massive butt plug laying around that doesn't even go where the sun doesn't shine.
The trick is finding a butt plug that's the right size for your bum. For me, this happens to be the Hush.
The trial and error process is most commonly how people end up settling on their ideal size. I'd recommend a slightly above average sized one to begin with so that way you can know if you need to go smaller or if you're comfortable going bigger, while at the same time having the chance to have some butt fun.

The We-Vibe Ditto
(My Wife's Favorite)
Written by Angela:
The We-Vibe Ditto is a great butt plug for couple's play, as it is small enough to use during sex without much discomfort no matter how you move around, and regardless of each individual's preference for size the Ditto bridges the gap between too big and too small perfectly. It's a real Goldilocks style butt plug, in my opinion.
It's made out of medical grade silicone and is BPA and phthalate free, so you can rest assured it's made out of body-safe materials. Despite the relatively smaller size, the way the toy protrudes forward gives it a lot of stability and staying power.
Controlling a butt plug can be a pain in the, well, I won't say it, but sometimes it isn't very convenient to have to press buttons on a toy that's shoved up your rear end. That's why I'm happy to say the Ditto has three modes of control:
- The two buttons found directly on the toy itself
- The bundled wireless We-Vibe brand remote that gives you full control
- Full app-control and customizability with the We-Care app
The first two options allow you to go through all of the choices that are offered by default from the Ditto.
This is in stark contrast to using the app. If you have the We-Care app, there's essentially no vibration intensity or pattern that is off limits once you figure out the controls. There's just such a massive array of features on offer through the app that you should read the full review if you want to get a better snapshot of what it can do.
All in all, it's a great butt plug that I'm happy is on the market, it's one of the most versatile and comfortable ones around. Plus, it's a great way for couples to get started together as it isn't on the more intimidating side.
My Favorite Prostate Massagers
The Lovense Edge
The Lovense Edge is probably my personal favorite prostate massager. It's certainly the one I reach for most often, which says everything you need to know, really.
The Edge has an adjustable design which allows me to hit my prostate with ease. The head of the toy has been designed to be inserted into the rectum and can be bent to better suit your own personal curves. The bendable nature is just strong enough to hold itself in place in use, but isn't too hard to move when its outside of the body.
It's a unique prostate massager in the sense that it has two different motors for vibration. There's one on the end of the toy that is inserted into your rectum and another on the end of the handle which rests on your perineum, which is also known as your gooch or taint. This double stimulation of two much under-serviced parts of the male anatomy was a shocker for me, it feels absolutely divine to have both motors going full rip.
Perineum stimulation is something that often times goes overlooked and until somewhat recently I actually didn't know much about it either. Your perineum is the area between your anus and your scrotum. A little tickle here and there goes a long way, its a pretty sensitive area that doesn't get the love it deserves.
It's controlled via the Lovense smartphone app which makes customizing the vibration patterns of both ends of the toy very easy on the fly.
The Lelo Hugo
The Lelo Hugo is very similar to the Edge by Lovense but with one main difference, it comes with a remote control while the Edge is controlled via a smartphone app, so if you want to keep your phone out of your sex life then the Hugo is the way to go.
The Hugo's remote makes controlling the toy extremely simple. It comes with 8 different adjustable settings which allow you to change the intensity of the vibrations of both motors.
Just like the Edge, the Huge also has a second arm which is used to stimulate the perineum which of course has it's own motor. The experience of the Hugo is very similar to the Edge, but not everybody likes being tethered to using a smartphone, so the Hugo bridges that gap nicely.
The lack of smartphone control makes the full range of customization a little less comprehensive, but the fact that there are eight different patterns that you can change the intensity on should hit all of the bases anyways.
It's definitely a product I'd highly recommend, although as Lelo is a luxury sex toy brand, the price is a pinch higher than your usual sex shop fare.
The Aneros Helix Syn Trident
The Aneros Helix Syn Trident is a very ergonomic prostate massager that checks almost every single one of the boxes I like in a prostate massager, except it doesn't have the benefit of a vibrating motor. This toy is perfectly shaped for wiggling around and doing kegels to hit your prostate though, so I sometimes prefer this more analog experience offered by the Syn.
It's made of the standard materials you'd expect from a good prostate massager, body-safe silicone covers the exterior and the black part of the handle is made out of silicon while the red part is made of ABS plastic.
The Helix Syn Trident is without a doubt the most comfortable prostate massager I've ever used. The handle is small and minute while the stem is hardly noticeable but at the same time I don't feel like the shaft of the Helix Syn Trident is going to snap off inside of me. Since there isn't much to the handle, it offers an unparalleled amount of wiggle room once inserted.
That being said if you're interested in a prostate massager that stimulates the prostate without the need for a vibrator, the Trident is a toy that will serve you well.
The Lelo Loki
The Lelo Loki is an interesting prostate massager which is completely unique to the other prostate massagers listed above. It has the standard vibrating motors and everything else we're used to, but it instead extends out from the anus instead of having a sort of handle that kind of fits between the cheeks.
It makes the toy much easier to control by extending your hand behind you, and also gives you a lot more control of how to move the toy around inside of you. Slow, slight movements work great when you have your hand on the handle and can really help you track down the beginnings and endings of your prostate gland.
It can normally be pretty tricky to properly rub your prostate with other prostate massagers, but the Loki makes this very easy and takes away a lot of the guesswork. It's big enough to cover the entirety of the prostate (if it doesn't, see your doctor, an enlarged prostate is a big deal) and the added come hither motion drives me absolutely wild.
Anyone who's ever tried to do this with the finger will attest to how it eventually gets kind of inconvenient to keep up, the Loki is a great way to outsource this motion to a machine so you can focus on the good stuff.
Using the Loki means all of the prostate stimulation with none of the store wrist.
The Lelo Loki Wave
The Lelo Loki Wave is essentially the exact same toy as the regular Loki, except for the added arm which is meant to stimulate the perineum like some of the other prostate massagers I've mentioned above.
There's two reasons I'd recommend this product over the original Loki, if you're a fan of perineum stimulation, and want a "come hither" motion typical of using a real life finger. The prostate arm moves gently forward to caress the prostate once Wave Mode is turned on, something I think nearly no other toy offers. The Wave is a bit more well rounded, and it has it's own place separate from the original Loki.
That being said, the Loki Wave comes with 10 different settings which control the vibration and motion of both arms of the toy allowing you to customize the experience to your liking.
It's a solid prostate massager that I'd highly recommend, especially to anybody who enjoys simultaneous prostate and perineum stimulation.
The Lelo Billy
Last but definitely not least we have the Lelo Billy.
It's probably least curved prostate massager that I'm aware of, and definitely the straightest one I've tried. It's also longer than most prostate massagers with 6.9 inches of insertable length and a width of 3.9 inches. It's like a mixture between a butt plug and a prostate massager, to be quite honest.
The Billy is a fantastic prostate massager if you'd like to explore a little bit deeper into your anal cavity than the typical anal toy will allow. It's the toy I reach for whenever I want much more fullness than the typical prostate massager can offer. The prostate is typically about 2-3 inches deep inside the body, and if you look carefully that's just where the Billy starts to curve to reach out and rub it the right way.
With 6 different vibration settings which range from light pulsing vibrations to very intense rumbly sensations. All of the 6 settings have an adjustable intensity which is controlled by using the (+) and (-) buttons on the toy itself. The higher settings are definitely not for the faint of heart.
The Billy is a great prostate massager that I'd highly recommend, especially to people looking to go a little bit deeper.
Some other anal toys that didn't make this article include anal hooks, anal beads, anal dildos and several other anal sex toys that we will be exploring at a later date in the future, right now we're dealing with the big boys first and then doing the accessory work, so stay tuned!
The sheer range and variety of things people have come up with to shove up your behind is staggering, and it'll take us a long time to actually get through all of them, even if we only did one thing from each category a day.
My wife has long known about the beauty that is anal stimulation, and I'm kicking myself now for being so against it mentally for so long. It was a matter of machismo and pride I think, but now that those barriers have been broken down I'm ready to get down to business.
Whatever anal toy you decide to use, always be sure to use anal toys safely and take the necessary safety precautions to ensure you don't get hurt. Also, make sure you clean the darn things, you know what your bum is capable of.
