Wanting to give your partner the blowjob of a lifetime is a very caring and considerate thing to do. However, not all of us were blessed with the throating skills typical of sword swallowers or hot dog eating champions.

Everyone's heard of the trick where you make a fist with your thumb inside of it, and I probably won't be the first person to tell you that that trick doesn't work at all.

Any extra length I've been able to get in my personal length using that trick was probably more placebo because I was more focused on my thumb than I was on my mouth, not some weird body-hack that turns off your gag reflex.

The next best thing is to use a deep throat spray to help do some of the leg work.

A deep throat spray has a topical anesthetic as one of its ingredients and it serves to slightly numb the mouth just enough for you to get the job done. It will reduce the intensity of your gag reflex, but it won't eliminate it completely, which is actually a good thing if you think about it.

In fact, it's not completely unheard of for doctors to apply a bit of anesthetic to a patient who has an extremely sensitive gag reflex just so they can get a throat swab done.

Do Deep Throat Sprays Work?

Whether or not deep throat sprays work is completely up to how you define "work." If you mean do deep throat sprays make your mouth completely numb and able to take down a ten inch colossus without batting an eyelid, then no, they don't work.

That's not what they're intended to do, or at least not what they're capable of. At best, even the most powerful deep throat spray will simply give you a numb feeling and suppress your gag reflex. Not entirely, but there is some suppression accomplished. You'll still have a gag reflex which is an important survival reflex after all, you'll just be able to get an inch or maybe even a few further down your throat without feeling like you're going to throw up. Many of these sprays work through the inclusion of either lidocaine or benzocaine, which are commonly found topical anesthetics.

So in short, deep throat sprays work if what you're trying to go for is a little extra during your oral sex sessions.

Adam & Eve Deep Throat Spray (My Top Pick)

This one has the benefit of having a little bit of flavor bundled into the experience, making the ritual of using it all the more pleasurable. It smells like cotton candy but the taste isn't what I'd describe as desirable, luckily you don't need to apply very much.

2-3 sprays to the back of my throat and about ten seconds of waiting later I can feel the numbness start to kick in, kind of like the same numbness when the doctor gives you shot into your gums except it's at the back of my throat. The nozzle is pretty smartly designed as it shoots it far into the back of the throat instead of just coating the sides of your cheeks like some of the less well thought out spray bottles I've used.

In a 1 ounce bottle you'll be treated to approximately 300-500 sprays which makes for at least a hundred and fifty uses, a little goes a long way with this guy.

It makes performing fellatio on my husband way easier and a single application makes for about half an hour of numbness. This one suppresses my gag reflex the best.

Comfortably Numb (Runner-Up)

This spray takes it home in the taste department, the flavor is similar to spray on spearmint breath freshener which has lead to Don using it in a pinch on more than one occasion.

The procedure for this spray is typical, 2-3 sprays to the back of the throat and you're good to go. This one lasts about 15-20 minutes which makes it one of the sprays that are good if you aren't interested in feeling like you just went through mouth surgery for another ten minutes after giving a BJ.

Personally, the efficacy of the numbing action works so well for me that my husband seldom lasts the entire duration of the spray, so I can deal.

Don't overdo it with this spray or you'll have this weird feeling in your mouth afterwards, at regular amounts it isn't an issue however.

Passion Lubes Oral Ecstasy

This particular deep throat spray uses benzocaine as opposed to lidocaine. What I noticed the main difference between this spray was over the lidocaine sprays was that it was much gentler in its numbing action than the ones that contained lidocaine. My gag reflex was still suppressed, but I had much more feeling in general.

Two quick spritzes to the back of the throat and you're good to go. I'd say an effective use time of about 20 minutes and I personally like this one when I'm giving a BJ both for my enjoyment and for his. I'm able to feel him inside my throat much better and it really gets my rocks off. Don likes the added enthusiasm, that's for sure.

The taste was meh, but ultimately worth the effort.

Doc Johnson Goodhead

This one doesn't have the long nozzles typical of the other sprays, so it works in a much more spread out fashion than the others. I recommend getting it really close to your mouth so you can make sure it reaches the back of your throat. A numb tongue isn't what you're going for here.

Interestingly enough this one tasted the best out of all of them, similar to some sore throat medicine I used to take when I was younger. Doc Johnson Goodhead is the fastest acting out of the sprays on the list but also only has an effective use time of about 10 minutes, that's towards the low end of the scale. Since the product doesn't taste atrocious and comes on fast reapplying once or twice doesn't break up the action during oral sex.

I use this to deep throat like a professional and it works fantastically for that. It's the most ergonomically designed one to boot.

Master Series Frozen

Now this one is my least favorite of all of the included sprays but it does actually work. It's another benzocaine deep throat spray so the kind of numbing action you'll be receiving is a tad more muted than if you chose one of the lidocaine options.

The taste is pretty raunchy to be quite frank and the spray nozzle has a bit of a learning curve before you stop numbing your tongue and your tongue alone. It still worked as advertised and I was able to get a few more inches down than usual while still having an alright amount of sensation.

As far as longevity the standard two sprays lasted me around 15 minutes total and my mouth returned to normal, that's one of the reasons why I felt the need to include this one.

Least good out of all of them.

Conclusion

Deep throat sprays are a fantastic way to give your partner the blowjob they've always dreamed of and they do work very well. If you want a spray that is as effective as possible at suppressing the gag reflex, go with one of the lidocaine options. If you're already fairly well-versed in oral sex and just want a little bit more pep in your step, then the benzocaine sprays are probably more your speed.

These sprays only affect the person giving the blowjob and no numbness is transferred onto the receiving end. I hope you enjoy using these sprays as much as my husband and I did, we always have at least one in our bedside table.
