Can You Wear A Butt Plug All Day?

All Day Butt Plugging

Written by: Angela Watson | Updated: April 13th, 2023

Ah, the ever so enjoyable, butt plug. My husband and I have developed quite a fondness for these wonderful toys, our favorite butt plug frequently sees the light of day right before it goes boldly where few toys have gone before.

We've worn them during foreplay and lovemaking and had great results, and I'd be lying if I said I never experimented a bit while alone. We both usually opt for relatively short term sessions, usually lasting no longer than an hour.

But what about wearing a butt plug all day?

I'm often asked by anal aficionados just how long they can get away with wearing their plugs while going about they day. If you aren't already aware, many people get a bit kick out of wearing an anal toy in public while doing mundane chores or even at work.

If you lived in a major city for a year, there's a good chance you'd have walked past someone downtown while they were using a butt plug, with us onlookers none the wiser.

I suppose going to the DMV wouldn't be as harrowing an experience if I was able to shimmy around a bit to stay entertained, so those people might be on to something.

Truthfully, there's a few different things that will affect whether or not you personally can wear a butt plug all day, and even then there are some rules of thumb that need to be followed no matter what.

All Day Butt Plug Factors

This advice is dispensed with the understanding that you have at least a passing knowledge of proper butt plug safety, if you're a little green on the topic I've written a butt plug safety guide you should skim over quickly at bare minimum.

Level Of Experience

Shockingly enough, the anus isn't accustomed to routinely being stretched apart by a toy, those who are still new to using butt plugs won't be able to get the level of comfort necessary to wear their plugs for an extended period of time. These newbies are still having trouble using them during a quick sex session without incident, if you're inexperienced it's important that you don't put the cart ahead of the horse. The entrance of the anus needs to become acclimated over time to having a butt plug in all day.

So that's why I only recommended that expert tier butt pluggers even consider wearing their toy for more than an hour at a time.

Handle Shape

The overall shape of the toy does matter, but one of the most crucial elements if you want to stay safe is to closely inspect the stem/handle of the sex toy before purchasing if extended wearing is your goal. The lining of the anus is quite fragile, a plug with the wrong design could result in some pinching of tissues together, resulting in decreased blood flow and a really bad time overall.

You want a toy that has as minimal a stem as possible and that has a handle that fits nicely between the cheeks for a secure fit. Chances are you'll have to try a few different plugs before you find one that's like a lock & key to your personal biology.

How Long Can I Keep A Butt Plug Inserted?

So now that that's out of the way, we can get to the real question. Once you've found the perfect plug for you and have worked yourself up to long term butt plug use, the world is your oyster just waiting for you to visit with your plug in tow.

Note that the plug will have to be removed any time you have a bowel movement, because duh. It's recommended that you have some kind of handkerchief or something handy to lay the toy down on otherwise you'll be sitting there with your plug in one hand and TP in the other.

There are pockets of sex educators that say you can get away with 10-12 hours of continuous use, but personally I think any advice that has the caveat of "you can probably do that" isn't worth going for.

My golden rule is that butt plugs should be used for no more than three hours at a time, at which point you should take a break for 15-45 minutes before reinserting the toy.

Ideally you also apply another helping of lubricant at this point as well to reduce the burden placed on the entrance to your bunghole. Remember, the place that will be under the most stress long-term is the linings towards the end, if there's anywhere worth avoiding chafing, well, come on now. If there are times where you're at work and can't get away with a little break, just try to give your anus as long of a rest as it can before reinserting the plug.

Follow this timeline even  if you don't feel any discomfort whatsoever, there's a good chance your body will develop some degree of comfort which will betray it's survival instincts. I really doubt the butt developed a natural safeguard against this sort of activity, you need to be proactive in your anal health.

Final Thoughts

If this is the road you'd like to take, more power to you. I just implore you to always do everything in your power to keep yourself safe so you can plug to your heart's content. I can't think of a single scenario in which I can type "ripped anus" in a sentence and have it not be talking about having an extremely bad time or avoiding one.

If you feel any discomfort or pain whatsoever immediately remove the plug and put it away, never ever try and "get over" the feeling of your body rejecting the toy. Have a ziplock bag or something on you whenever you do this so you aren't stuck with a dirty toy in your purse or backpack, you'll thank me for that advice if you ever suddenly need to take it out while out of the house. Best of luck, please don't hurt yourself.

Hi Don,
Good advice all around. I’m a bit unusual, but I’ve exchanged messages with men like me who practically live plugged. From the very first time I ever inserted the classic butt plug (the cone with the base), I knew I never wanted to take it out. It didn’t take long to learn that the plug needed a few key features to be comfortable and safe enough for long-term wear. I’m talking about 24/7/365, with time out only for BMs and cleanup. I took a two-year break from living plugged in 2017 when I moved to the South, home of fried and fatty cuisine! But now that I’ve indulged myself of enough fried and fatty foods to last a lifetime, I’m back to living plugged. I recommend the Devi Glass Butt Plug, but the NJOY 2.0 (stainless steel) is also good. I don’t recommend silicone plugs because they will irritate and require frequent lubing. The most import part of the plug is the shaft and the base. But don’t go too big with the business end fo the plug, either, just long enough to reach the prostate (that’s all you’ll feel inside, anyway). The Devi is angled, so that if you turn it around you can move the tip of the plug AWAY from the prostate for long-term wear; turn it TOWARD the prostate if you’re going for a sex session and want maximum excitement. One benefit from staying plugged at least 10 hours a day is that the sphincter is exercised as it would be if you live an active life and not just sitting down. Staying plugged and exercising the sphincter keeps the blood flow healthy.

You’re definitely not the first person I’ve heard of who likes consistent wearing. Lots of people seem to do it and get away with it, but they’re typically rather in tune with their rear ends and not novices stepping up to the plate. Some people do really well when they schedule time with the plug removed with other things like showering or other quick breaks. Enough people seem to use them all day and are far from unhealthy, but I do think the effects of a consistently stretched sphincter & lower digestive tract probably aren’t recommended by 9/10 doctors, you know?

Typically just listening to your body is enough to keep you out of trouble. Still, it’s important to know what you’re up against.

Curious…Why would a person wear a butt plug all day? What would be the reason?

Some people really like it, it’s almost a compulsion it seems for some people. I can barely talk about butt plugs at all without someone asking if it’s safe to wear one all day. They can have their privacy so I don’t pry, but I sure hope they use them safely.
